The strength of your WiFi signal is dependent on your WiFi router. If you have an old, outdated WiFi router then the signal strength will be weak but if the router is a new & expensive one then you will have good signal strength.
But wait, there’s a twist here, even after having an expensive router with all the new features, the signal strength would be weak if you put your router in the wrong place.
The placement of your WiFi router is crucial because if the placement is optimal then the WiFi signal will be strong. To help you make the most of your WiFi and get strong signals, we will be giving you some tips regarding the placement of your WiFi router. Let’s get started:
Place In A Central Location
The best position to place your router is in a central location. If you place your router on the side of your house or in the peripheries then the WiFi signal will be affected. Most WiFi routers don’t have very wide ranges and if your router is not placed in a central location then the reach of your WiFi router’s signals will be limited.
WiFi routers transmit signals in all directions, not in a single direction so, if you place your WiFi router in a central location of your home then it will give you the best range possible.
Place At A Raised Location
Since the WiFi signals are transmitted through radio waves which are usually spread downwards, placing your router at an elevated place, raised up from the ground will give you the best signals. If you place the router on the ground or on the floor then the signals will be transmitted down into the ground which is usually not useful except in the situations when you want to strengthen the signals of the floor below.
We recommend that you place your router at a raised location, on a bookshelf, or mount it on the wall to get the best signals. You will instantly see the difference between the signal strength after placing your router at a raised place.
Avoid Any Obstructions Nearby
As mentioned, WiFI signals are radio waves and these can be disrupted by obstructions such as concrete walls, floors, and other such things. If there are more obstructions between your device and the router then the signal will be weaker.
These physical obstructions absorb wireless signals and obstruct the signal, and ultimately reduce the quality. The best place to place your router is at such a place where there are no physical obstructions nearby or minimal obstructions.
Avoid Electronic Devices
You should also make sure that you are avoiding electronic devices and there are no electronic devices nearby your wireless routers. Electronic devices are found everywhere in the home including the kitchen, the lounge, the bedrooms, etc. There are a lot of different devices and appliances that use radio waves such as baby monitors, cordless phones, wireless speakers, etc. These devices can disrupt the signal of your WiFi router and weaken the signal strength.
You should try to place your router away from such devices that also use radio waves and can interfere with the signal of your WiFi router. If that is not possible then you can visit the default gateway address of the router i.e 192.168.10.1 and change the frequency band of signal transmission if the router has dual-band support. Nowadays, there are routers coming with different default gateway addresses such as 192.168.8.1 and various other addresses.
Avoid Water & Reflective Surface
Another culprit that can interfere with WiFi signals is water and other reflective surfaces. So, you might want to reconsider your decision of placing the router near a fish tank if you have made such a decision. Such surfaces can scatter and distort the WiFi signals which will ultimately weaken the WiFi signal strength. This includes windows, mirrors, file cabinets, etc.
Adjust The Antennas
The position of your router’s antenna is also important and you should try to position your router’s antenna in a way that they are perpendicular to each other. If your router has two antennas then one of the antennas should be positioned sideways while the other one straight up. This is the most optimal position and it will ensure that the signals are uniformly disturbed in all directions.
