What Buhari said about technology and innovation gap between Nigeria and the developed world

He however said the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure was strategically positioned to fill the gap.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, titled “President Buhari directs NASENI to bridge gaps in COVID-19 research, technology,” Buhari spoke at a meeting with the Board of NASENI at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President said:-

“The countries that are at the forefront of economic recovery have only one thing in common: investment and sustained research and development work in knowledge economy.

“COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the Technology and innovation gap between us and the developed World, which NASENI is strategically positioned to fill.’’

“However, in order to realise its full potential, NASENI must be empowered through the provision of adequate financial, human and material resources and be given the autonomy and independence to forge international partnerships to acquire the relevant technologies for socio-economic and industrial advancement of the country.

Also, the police in Anambra State have arrested Emeka Chinwuba, an aide to the Anambra State Governor, for circulating fake information on COVID-19 scare at Government House, Awka.

Chinwuba was paraded on Monday at the Anambra State Police Command headquarters.

Chinwuba had on 15 January allegedly circulated information on social media, stating that there was COVID-19 scare in the Anambra State government House.

He also alleged that no fewer than 30 government officials had contracted the disease.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, said the 56 year-old suspect was arrested following the command’s investigation that required his explanation on the role he allegedly played in the misinformation.

Mohammed said series of other false information were also circulated.

The PPRO added:-

“The allegations require proof and the police intend to get to the root of the matter. The involvement of the suspect so far is to the extent that the circulation of the information has been traced to him. He therefore has a duty to explain either his direct involvement in authoring it or otherwise.”
