According to reports, Tesla is negotiating a nickel deal with the world’s largest miner, BHP Group (BHP Group), because the electric car manufacturer’s goal is to increase production and seek to avoid tight supply.
People familiar with the matter said that the price negotiations have been ongoing, and the two sides have not yet reached a final agreement.
In July of this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk urged mining companies to produce more nickel, which is a key component of the batteries that power the company’s electric vehicles. Musk also claimed that under the conditions of environmental protection, the company will provide long-term “massive” procurement contracts.
Due to the challenges of sustainable procurement, Musk is concerned about nickel supply. Since nickel accounts for only a small part of BHP Billiton’s business, reaching a deal with Tesla may surprise some BHP Billiton investors. This will mark the company’s efforts to expand space and reorganize its nickel division to serve battery manufacturers.
