Apple Safari 16.1 adds support for passkeys, web notifications, Pencil hover experience

Naija Tech News on October 25, in addition to the launch of the official versions of macOS 13 Ventura, iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1, Apple also released the official version of Safari 16.1, which brings many new features to Safari on the Apple platform. Safari 16.1 is built directly into iOS 16.1, iPadOS 16.1 and macOS 13 Ventura, but is also available for macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur .

The update includes macOS 13 Ventura’s Web Push Notifications, which allow websites and web apps to send notifications using the same standards as other browsers. Notifications can be sent even when Safari is not running and managed in Notification Center.

Web Push functionality already implemented for a web application or website will automatically work in Safari, using the same Apple Push Notification service as native push on Apple devices.

With Safari 16.1, passkeys can be used on devices running iPadOS 16, macOS 13 Ventura, macOS Monterey, and macOS Big Sur in addition to devices running iOS 16. Pass key locks are designed to replace passwords.

“Browsing in Safari has become more secure with a passkey, a next-generation credential that cannot be phished or compromised, making it more secure and easy to use. Passkeys can replace passwords, leverage Touch ID or Face ID Biometric identification and secure synchronization with end-to-end encryption using iCloud Keychain, which is common across Apple devices such as iPad, iPhone and Mac. As a result of a joint effort with the FIDO Alliance, Google and Microsoft, the passkey will be Works with a variety of apps and websites, allowing users to log into websites or apps on non-Apple devices with just their iPad.”

For the new 2022 iPad Pro models, Safari 16.1 adds support for the Apple Pencil hover experience, a feature that allows the iPad Pro’s display to detect the Apple Pencil when it is within 12 mm of it. In Safari 16.1, users will be able to see hover states for links, animations, etc.

Other new features in Safari 16.1 include new viewport sizes in iPadOS to support pre-stage scheduling, improved screenshots, and more.
