According to the news from Sony China, the design of Sony’s autonomous entertainment robot aibo has recently won the “Cabinet Minister’s Award” at the 2020 Japan National Invention Award hosted by the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation. This award aims to commend inventions that have achieved remarkable achievements and practical effects in the fields of science and technology, second only to the “Bonus Invention Award” of the Japan National Invention Award.
Naija Tech News learned that Sony AIBO means “Artificial Intelligence Robot” in English. At the beginning of this year, Sony’s autonomous entertainment robot “aibo” launched a limited edition caramel color in 2020 at a price of 198,000 yen (approximately RMB 12,403).
The old version of aibo was discontinued in 2006, and Sony launched a new aibo robot in October 2017. The improved aibo is equipped with more flexible movements. Capacitive touch sensors are installed on its back, head and chin, allowing it to move playfully like a puppy. The two OLED displays give people the sensation of blinking and closing their eyes. The built-in sensor can help the robot puppy recognize sounds and images. It can recognize 100 faces.
Sony stated that the awards focused on the “perceptual value” that touched people’s hearts, and highly praised aibo’s design. The original intention of the design was to become a support for people’s emotions and enrich people’s lives. Aibo’s design is based on the theme of “sense of life”, based on the beautiful and cute “circular” expansion, trying to get close to the image of the puppy in people’s subconscious, it is very unique. Sony uses self-developed ultra-compact 1-axis and 2-axis actuators and AI technology to enable it to express various emotions when communicating with people. Aibo can also recognize the owner’s face and make eye contact through the sensor, which is close to people’s hearts.
