Samsung officially launched the Galaxy S24 Ultra mobile phone at the Galaxy Unpacked conference held today. The most noteworthy change in the camera is that the 10-megapixel 10x telephoto lens was changed to a 50-megapixel 5x Telephoto lens.
Samsung said the new telephoto lens on the Galaxy S24 Ultra phone has a wider aperture of f/3.4, while the telephoto aperture of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is f/4.9.
In addition, Samsung has also upgraded the pixel size of the new telephoto lens. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is 1.12 µm, while the Galaxy S24 Ultra is 1.4 µm. Samsung says this helps the Galaxy S24 Ultra take detailed photos in dim light conditions.
Samsung said that the 50-megapixel 5x telephoto lens also better supports optical image stabilization, and due to the use of a 50-megapixel sensor, it can perform 8K recording at 1x and 5x zoom (but the frame rate of 8K video is still limited at 30 frames/second).
Foreign technology media SamMobile shared photos of some scenes quickly taken with 3x, 5x, 10x and 30x zoom. IT Home attached the comparison pictures as follows:

As you may have noticed, not much has changed. When zoomed beyond 5x, the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s photos are less dull and have deeper contrast, although the opposite is sometimes true. At 10x zoom, the S24 Ultra does a better job of reducing noise, but that’s not always the case.
Overall, the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s picture quality isn’t noticeably better. Still, there are some benefits to 5x telephoto. The biggest benefit is that we have a larger operating range between 3x and 10x. On previous devices, the 3x telephoto could handle zooms up to 10x, and its resolution was only 10 million pixels, which meant that picture quality dropped significantly beyond 5x.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra can capture portrait images at 5x zoom, similar to Apple’s latest iPhone. This is a new feature in addition to the 1x and 3x portrait modes that were common in the early days.
