Xbox official website announced that Microsoft and B company parent company ZeniMax Media have reached an acquisition agreement to acquire ZeniMax Media for US$7.5 billion in cash.
ZeniMax Media, an entertainment company, has several industry-leading game developers, including Bethesda Softworks, which is the manufacturer of The Elder Scrolls. The company also owns id Software, which is known for its “Doom”, “Furious” and “German Headquarters” shooting game series.
Naijatechnews understands that this move has increased the number of Xbox internal game development studios from the previous 15 to 24 , and allowed it to control the copyrights of some of the most popular games in the game industry.
“Bethesda’s games have always held a special place on Xbox and in the hearts of millions of players around the world,” Xbox Director Phil Spencer said in a statement. “Bethesda is a passionate believer like us, and they are committed to creating diversity. The creative experience, exploring new game franchises, and telling stories in bold ways.
As a result of this large-scale acquisition, all of Bethesda’s games will now be included in Xbox Game Pass on consoles, PCs and Android via Xbox Game Streaming. However, games currently tied to the contract will still comply with the previously agreed exclusive terms. Therefore, “Death Loop” by Arkane Studios will remain a timed exclusive game for Sony PlayStation 5.
Microsoft expects that the acquisition will be completed in the second half of fiscal 2021, and will have little impact on non-GAAP operating income in fiscal 2021 and 2022. Non-GAAP accounting standards do not include the expected impact of acquisition accounting adjustments, as well as integration and transaction-related expenses.
