According to new data from Sensor Tower, in the third quarter of 2020, the revenue generated by Apple’s App Store is almost twice that of Google Play Store again.
Sensor Tower initially estimated that in the third quarter, global consumer spending on in-app purchases, subscriptions and one-time app purchases on the App Store rose to 19 billion U.S. dollars, a year-on-year increase of 31%. In contrast, Google’s Play Store grew 34% over the same period to reach 10.3 billion US dollars.
Overall, the revenue of the two app stores was 32% higher than last year’s US$22.2 billion, while the number of installs increased by 23.3% to 36.5 billion.
In terms of App installations, the App Store achieved a growth of 2.5%, with an estimated 8.2 billion installs, while the Play Store grew vigorously with 28.3 billion installs , a year-on-year increase of 31%. Although the number of first installs has increased significantly, Android is still far behind iOS as a platform for making money.
Sensor Tower found that the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic continues to have a positive impact on the application market, a phenomenon that first appeared at the end of the second quarter of July.
Social media rookie TikTok was the non-gaming app with the highest revenue in the third quarter , followed by YouTube, Tinder, Tencent Video and Disney+. TikTok also leads the number of installs , followed by Facebook, Zoom, WhatsApp and Instagram.

The App Store is the leader in this category, with in-game spending generated $12.4 billion, a year-on-year increase of 24%.
