According to reports, Facebook said on Thursday that the company will update its internal discussion policy to limit the ability of its employees to discuss social and political issues.
Facebook spokesperson Joe Osborne (Joe Osborne) said the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg (Mark Zuckerberg) on Thursday outlined the restriction plan to employees, the details of which will be announced next week.
“What we hear from employees is that they want to be able to choose to join discussions about social and political issues, rather than accidentally hearing such discussions during work.” Osborn said in a statement. “We are updating our employee policies and work tools to ensure that the company culture remains respectful and inclusive.”
Osborne said that the new rules will apply to employees discussing how executives handle politically sensitive content on the Facebook platform, which is the subject of intense debate within the company this summer. He said that Facebook’s goal is to ensure that discussions on such decisions can still be conducted in “appropriate channels” without hindering other work-related discussions.
In addition, Osborne said that the company is still strengthening its anti-harassment policy, the purpose is to allow employees to maintain mutual respect in the dialogue, and to protect those employees who are not fully represented.
Google also said this week that the company will expand audits on internal message boards, citing “global dialogue is difficult.”
Like other technology companies, Facebook prides itself on promoting public discussions within the company, while taking a strong stance on public disclosure of such conversations.
On the internal social network Workplace, which is similar to the Facebook platform, employee conversations can be carried out freely, and Zuckerberg will accept questions from employees at the weekly Q&A event. But as employees increasingly bluntly expressed their differences of opinion with Zuckerberg, the content of the conversation on Workplace has been leaked to the media, which has become a headache for Facebook.
