According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple is planning a “not so ambitious” wireless charging pad to fill the void left by the cancellation of AirPower.
Apple’s original AirPower wireless charger plan includes the ability to charge iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time. After announcing the launch of AirPower together with iPhone X in 2017, Apple confirmed that it cancelled the device last year. The reason behind this decision has never been officially announced, but the rumors mentioned multiple issues.
According to Bloomberg’s sources, one of the biggest problems is the risk of AirPower overheating. It is not uncommon for wireless chargers to get hot, especially when charging multiple devices at the same time.
However, as other reports have claimed, AirPower may not be completely dead, and AirPower may come back…in some form.
“More than a year after the demise of AirPower, Apple is developing a less ambitious wireless charger for the iPhone ,” Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman wrote in an article about AirPower’s new charging technology.
Gurman did not disclose any other details. However, his description of this “not so ambitious” device indicates that the new AirPower may not be able to charge three Apple devices at the same time as the original device, which can be understood as a “weakened version.”
One possibility is that the new charger does not support charging Apple Watch. Because a potential AirPower problem is that its charging coil is too large to support the iPhone and Apple Watch’s proprietary charging standards. This is also the main reason why other multi-device wireless chargers do not support Apple Watch at all or have separate Apple Watch charging components.
Naijatechnews.com understands that analyst Ming-Chi Guo pointed out in a January report that Apple’s new AirPower wireless charging pad is part of a huge product lineup, and these products are planned to be launched in 2020.
