Apple is actively developing iOS 18 (internally codenamed Crystal) and macOS 15 (codenamed Glow). Foreign technology media MacRumors recently published a blog post to share information about the accessibility features of the two systems.
Adaptive Voice Shortcuts
This feature allows users to map unique spoken phrases to accessibility settings. Users can choose to create a custom phrase and select which accessibility settings they wish to toggle by speaking the phrase.
By using Adaptive Voice Shortcuts, users will be able to toggle existing accessibility features like VoiceOver, Voice Control, Zoom, and more.
Live Speech adds a custom “Categories” section
The existing Live Speech feature in Apple’s operating system will have a new section for user-defined categories. Users can place phrases into categories of their choice.
When creating a category, users can name their category and choose from approximately 20 different icons. Once the categories are created, users can add the phrases they want.
More apps will support custom font sizes
Apple plans to expand support for custom font sizes in apps. This option, located in the Display section of the Accessibility settings pane, allows users to select custom font sizes for individual applications and select their preferred font size when reading.
macOS Sonoma currently supports custom font sizes for the following 5 apps:
Calendar Calendar
Finder
Mail mail
Messages
Notes
Apple plans to expand support in macOS 15 and add 5 more apps:
Books books
News news
Stocks stocks
Tips Tips
Weather weather
Sources familiar with custom font sizes told MacRumors that Apple is internally testing an option to change the font size of the macOS menu bar, but it is unclear whether the company will make this option available to end users.
There’s also news that Apple is working on more accessibility features, one of which would take advantage of eye tracking on the device, but no further details were available at the time of writing. As the development of the operating system continues and preparations are made for WWDC 2024, more information should come to light.
