Apple yesterday announced a new support document, confirming that HomePod and HomePod mini can update Apple Music’s lossless audio support OTA in the future, and the document also revealed some other information.
The document revealed that Apple TV 4K “currently does not support high-resolution lossless”. When Apple TV 4K was released, only 16-bit (44.1 KHz) to 24-bit (48 KHz) range. However, Apple uses the term “current” to imply that there may be OTA in the future, but Apple has not confirmed this yet.
Second, the document states that Apple Music “will not be completely lossless” during wired playback of AirPods Max:
In other words, AirPods Max can be connected to an analog signal source through the Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter cable, so AirPods Max can be connected to devices that play lossless and high-resolution lossless audio, but considering that an analog-to-digital conversion is performed in the middle, the final The playback effect will not reach a completely lossless level.
However, Apple’s supporting documents also acknowledge that the difference between Apple Music’s standard audio and lossless audio will be “almost indistinguishable.”
Naijatechnews has learned that Apple’s lossless audio is encoded into Apple’s lossless audio codec files, with lossless quality ranging from 16-bit 44.1kHz to 24-bit 48kHz. Hi-Res Lossless provides a 24-bit 192kHz format.
Apple also stated that when pairing AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max with the iPhone, they only support the Bluetooth AAC codec and will not be able to play Apple Music lossless files.
Apple did not mention AirPods compatibility in the press release announcing the new features. On its website, Apple confirmed that lossless audio can be listened to on iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV. HomePod is compatible, although Apple’s announcement did not List it.
To listen to lossless audio on an iOS device, you need a wired headset compatible with the ALAC format, and you may also need a digital-to-analog converter. Apple also stated that AirPods Max does not support lossless audio playback via Lightning.
Although AirPods, AirPods Max and AirPods Pro do not support lossless audio, they support Dolby Atmos spatial audio, and by default, Apple Music will automatically play Dolby on all AirPods and Beats headsets with H1 or W1 chips Atmos music.
