Dell Technologies notified its employees on Monday that it will lay off workers once this week to cut costs in response to the economic impact of the epidemic.
The company’s chief operating officer Jeff Clarke (Jeff Clarke) told employees at a quarterly all-hands meeting that the layoffs will not be limited to any specific team or department.
A Dell spokesperson said in a statement: “We are still evaluating our business to ensure that we have the right number of team members in the right roles and in the areas where customers need us most.”
Dell faces uneven demand during the new coronavirus pandemic. Although companies and consumers are snapping up personal computers to work from home, some companies have become more cautious in purchasing major data centers. Dell has previously suspended contributions to its employee 401(K) pension plan this fiscal year, as well as bonuses and promotions.
The company declined to disclose the specific number of layoffs. As of the end of January, the company had 165,000 employees worldwide.
Dell also launched a remote work program to employees around the world on Monday, requiring volunteers to work from home as much as possible, from one to five days a week, as long as they get the manager’s approval.
The company said that it will not make any adjustments to compensation for the time being, and will issue a one-time $400 to employees who work remotely for the purchase of home office equipment.
