As wildfires continue to spread across California, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai sent an email to employees last week, calling on them to register for the internal emergency alert system. The system includes assistance for specific locations.
“Like many Google employees in the Bay Area, the first thing I noticed when I went out today was the smell of smoke from nearby wildfires,” Pichai wrote in an email sent to employees last week. “California and Colorado The wildfires have forced thousands of people to leave their homes, but we have always been with many of the affected Google employees.”
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Pichai told employees that the company will track employees who choose to sign up for the internal emergency alert system. The system is operated and managed by Google’s security team. He said that Google’s Global Security and Resilience Service (GSRS) is tracking and contacting employees in the affected areas while providing them with assistance. The GSRS team also provides employees with suggestions and techniques to accurately respond to poor air quality, emergency evacuation and power outages. Pichai said, “The season of high incidence of wildfires in the United States has just begun, and the epidemic has made it more difficult to deal with wildfires.”
“Our security team will continue to pay attention to the current situation and promptly contact Google employees affected by the wildfire,” Pichai wrote in an email. “If you have not registered with our system, you can also use our emergency location Share your location history with the notification system so that our security team can also help you when you need it.”
Last week, hundreds of fires broke out in California at the same time. Thousands of people have been evacuated during the record fire season. At present, wildfires have caused at least 5 deaths and 30 injuries. The air quality has been rated as “unhealthy” for several days.
The wildfire is also serious in the San Francisco Bay Area, where Google’s headquarters is located and where many scientific and technological workers live.
Last week, Google added some new features to its Google maps and search products to mark information about nearby wildfires in real time, including location, scale, borders, and road closures.
Before Pichai sent the email, Google’s management was already thinking of ways to help employees who had lost contact. Pichai also said that Google has launched an internal donation campaign aimed at alleviating the impact of wildfires in 2020. He also added that after the wildfire broke out, the company has donated US$250,000 to the Fire Charity Center.
“Thanks to all the teams for their efforts to make these new features available in time for the wildfire season, and to everyone who is eager to help others,” Pichai said. “Those who live in California, Colorado and other vulnerable Everyone in the affected area, please pay attention to your own safety and contact us when necessary.”
