August 16 US President Donald Trump (Donald Trump) has joined the short video platform Triller, which is a competitor to TikTok, a video sharing app he hopes to ban in the United States. Trump’s Triller account (@donaldjtrump) currently has about 3,500 fans, and his introduction video has more than 590,000 views.
In the past few weeks, as the Trump administration has continued its crackdown on TikTok in the United States, Triller is one of several similar apps that have seen a sharp increase in users, with more than 700,000 downloads in the past month. TikTok said in April that its global downloads have reached 2 billion times, with 315 million downloads in the first quarter of 2020 alone.
Triller was launched in 2015 two years earlier than TikTok. Co-founder Ryan Kavanaugh told CNBC that the company sees itself as the “adult version” of TikTok and the content is “more adventurous”.
Last Friday, US President Trump issued an executive order giving ByteDance 90 days to sell or spin off its TikTok business in the United States. TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is headquartered in China. The Trump administration has stated that the company may share information about Americans with the Chinese government, but the company denies this. Earlier this month, the president issued an executive order that would block all transactions between the United States and ByteDance in order to “respond to a national emergency in the information and communication technology supply chain.”
Naijatechnews.com has learned that Microsoft has been negotiating to acquire TikTok. The deal was called “Golden Cup Poisoned Drink” by co-founder Bill Gates. There were reports last week that Twitter may be interested in this. Microsoft stated that it expects to complete the discussion “no later than September 15, 2020.”
