Following the release of Ubuntu 20.04.1 last week, two earlier LTS versions have also been updated, namely Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS and Ubuntu 16.04.7 LTS.
Ubuntu 18.04.5 introduced an updated hardware support stack from Ubuntu 20.04, so it can run normally on newer hardware platforms. The Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS desktop version will use the new stack by default while supporting other architectures. The Ubuntu 18.04.5 server version uses the older kernel by default, but you can easily switch to the newer HWE kernel.
In addition to the new HWE stack, LTS users can apply multiple bug fixes and security updates in the updated software package. These updates focus on maintaining the stability and compatibility of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.
As for the older series Ubuntu 16.04.7, this update will not bring any new hardware support stack, but will focus on delivering the latest security package updates and other fixes.
For Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu Desktop, Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Cloud, Ubuntu Base and Ubuntu Kylin have a five-year support cycle. Other community flavors of Ubuntu 16.04 have been EOL.
Finally, these new Ubuntu LTS ISOs have added security fixes to the recent GRUB2 security vulnerabilities.
