On August 13, local time, the Linux Foundation announced that Facebook had joined as a platinum member.
Prior to this, Facebook had been the main contributor to many hosted projects of the Linux Foundation, such as Presto, GraphQL, Osquery, and ONNX. The Linux Foundation also stated that Facebook has always been an active participant in the development of the Linux kernel because it has hired many key Linux kernel development and maintenance personnel.
Despite being criticized for privacy, Facebook does make a lot of contributions in the open source field. Not only is software open source, Facebook has also initiated some projects to promote the development of the open source ecosystem:
- Through Facebook Connectivity and the open source Telecommunications Infrastructure Project (TIP) Foundation, we will bring fast and reliable networks to people without the Internet. Facebook’s Magma open source project allows telecom operators to easily deploy mobile networks in hard-to-reach areas, thereby reducing the cost of building and maintaining telecom networks.
- Facebook’s “Data for Good” program is used to share geographic data to solve some humanitarian problems worldwide, including playing a role during the COVID-19 epidemic.
- Create and maintain the PyTorch open source ecosystem, which has contributed a lot to the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in computer vision, natural language processing and other disciplines;
- React.js was also created by Facebook. It powers some of the most popular websites in the world and has become a front-end web development standard due to its simplicity and flexibility.
Linux Foundation members are divided into three different levels: silver, gold and platinum. The platinum level is the highest level, with an annual membership fee of US$500,000 and a board seat . AT&T, Google, Huawei, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, Tencent, and VMware are among the platinum members.
As a platinum member, Kathy Kam, Facebook’s head of open source, became a member of the board. Kam has 20 years of experience in engineer, product management, and developer relationship leadership, having worked at Google and Microsoft.
