2022 Toyota Venza Review
Nteltech featured image
The 2022 Toyota Venza is a good option if you’re shopping for a hybrid SUV. The Venza has a refined and fuel-efficient powertrain that can return up to 40/37 mpg city/highway. The interior is comfortable and nicely trimmed, and it’s packed with standard convenience and safety features. The Venza also provides a smooth and relaxing ride. On the downside, the Venza’s cargo area is relatively small for an SUV of this size.
Should I Buy the Toyota Venza?
The Toyota Venza is well worth a look, but it isn’t exactly the best value in this class at roughly $33,000 and up. Before you buy, you may want to consider less expensive alternatives like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, and Honda CR-V Hybrid. Each provides more cargo space than the Venza as well.

Toyota Venza Versus the Competition
Toyota Venza vs. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
The Toyota RAV4 Hybrid has a lot in common with the Venza, including its 219-horsepower hybrid system, five-seat layout, and array of active safety features. These SUVs aren’t complete twins however. The Venza has more curvaceous styling, a higher-end cabin, and a considerably larger 12.3-inch infotainment touch screen. On the other hand, the boxy RAV4 Hybrid sports a larger cargo area and a lower starting price than the Venza by about $3,800. For those reasons, we think the RAV4 is the better starting point for most shoppers.

Toyota Venza vs. Honda CR-V Hybrid
It’s a similar story with the Honda CR-V Hybrid. Like the Venza, the CR-V Hybrid has a peppy and fuel-efficient powertrain, lots of standard tech and safety features, an upmarket interior, and well-rounded driving dynamics. The CR-V’s infotainment system isn’t as user-friendly, but the Honda costs less than the Toyota, and it provides much more cargo space. It’s the better pick for most buyers.

Venza Interior: … Is That a Lexus?
Venza Interior Quality
The Toyota Venza stands out with an upmarket interior that looks and feels every bit as nice as some Lexus models. The styling is modern yet reserved, and most surfaces are padded or at least covered in soft-touch plastic. Overall fit and finish is great for a nonluxury SUV. Minimal wind or road noise makes its way into the cabin as well.
Venza Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation
The Toyota Venza is offered with a standard 8-inch touch screen or an available 12.3-inch touch screen. Both displays have a simple menu structure and respond promptly to inputs, but the 8-inch touch screen is a bit easier to use, thanks to its accompanying buttons and knobs that adjust the audio and climate control settings. By comparison, models equipped with the 12.3-inch touch screen replace these physical controls with a touch-sensitive panel that requires more attention to operate.
- Standard infotainment features: an 8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, wireless device charging, HD Radio, satellite radio, a six-speaker stereo, four USB ports, and Bluetooth
- Available infotainment features: a 12.3-inch touch screen, navigation, and a nine-speaker stereo
- Additional standard features: dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and ambient lighting

Venza Cargo Space
The Toyota Venza has 28.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind its rear seats and 55.1 cubic feet with these seats folded flat. That’s roomy enough for stowing carry-on bags, a big haul of groceries, or large boxes from the hardware store. That said, most hybrid SUVs provide far more cargo space. The Venza’s cargo floor is relatively high as well, which can make it tougher to load heavy items. On the plus side, a hands-free power liftgate comes standard on all trims.
How Many People Does the Venza Seat?
The Toyota Venza is a two-row SUV with five seats. The front seats are nicely contoured and supportive, and the range of adjustments make it easy to find a comfortable driving position. There’s sufficient headroom and legroom up front, even for taller occupants. The same can be said of the rear seats, which provide decent space for kids or adults. Outward visibility is great to the front and sides, though the rear sightlines are somewhat obscured by the thick roof pillars.
Cloth upholstery and a power-adjustable driver’s seat are standard. Options include synthetic leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, and a heated steering wheel.
Venza and Child Car Seats
There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the Venza’s rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the highest rating of Good+, which indicates that it’s among the easiest and most versatile to use.
Venza Performance: Smooth as Silk
Venza Engine
The 2022 Toyota Venza is equipped with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors that deliver a combined 219 horsepower. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive are standard.
Overall, this hybrid system is a smooth operator. The stout electric motors zip the Venza off the line briskly, and they work in tandem with the gas engine to hustle the SUV around town and up to highway speeds without issue. Zero to 60 mph takes about eight seconds. Throttle response is snappy, and the CVT moves quickly and smoothly through its gear ratios. Passing power isn’t commanding, but it should be perfectly adequate for most driving situations.
Venza Gas Mileage
The Toyota Venza gets an EPA-rated 40 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway, which is great fuel economy for a hybrid SUV.
Venza Ride and Handling
The Toyota Venza may have a sporty physique, but it’s more of a cruiser. That’s not a bad thing, as the Venza remains stable and surefooted around turns with minimal body lean. The steering is lightly weighted and responsive, and it’s an easy SUV to maneuver in tight areas. The brakes provide strong stopping power as well. The Venza’s greatest asset, however, is arguably its plush ride quality. The suspension dispatches bumps and dips in the road with confidence.
Venza Towing Capacity
The Toyota Venza is not rated to tow a trailer. Opt for the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid or Hyundai Tucson Hybrid if you want a hybrid SUV that can tow.
Venza Reliability
Is the Toyota Venza Reliable?
The 2022 Toyota Venza has a predicted reliability score of 78 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average, and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.
Toyota Venza Warranty
The 2022 Venza comes with a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Additionally, the Venza is covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile hybrid system warranty and a 10-year/150,000-mile battery pack warranty.
Venza Safety
Venza Crash Test Results
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2022 Toyota Venza an overall safety rating of five out of five stars. The Venza earned five stars in the side crash test and four stars in the frontal crash and rollover tests.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2022 Venza the highest rating of Good in all six crash tests. The XLE and Limited trims received the second-highest rating of Acceptable for how well their headlights illuminate the road ahead, and these models were awarded a Top Safety Pick designation. The LE trim received the second-lowest rating of Marginal for forward visibility.
The IIHS uses a different scale for grading collision avoidance features. The Venza earned the top rating of Superior for its standard front crash prevention systems.

The Final Call
The 2022 Toyota Venza does just about everything you could ask of a hybrid SUV. It gets great gas mileage, it’s comfortable and enjoyable to drive, and it comes packed with helpful tech and safety features. It’s also attractively styled. Ultimately though, the upscale Venza lives in the shadow of its more affordable and more capable RAV4 Hybrid sibling.
